The return of Gorillaz is in full force, with the group releasing six singles thus far and announcing several live performances, including the launch of their own Demon Dayz Festival in the United Kingdom city of Margate. Up to this point, United States Gorillaz fans had just their set at Outside Lands to look forward to, but a new interview with Gorillaz mastermind Damon Albarn confirmed a massive bombshell.
QMagazine interviewed Albarn and Gorillaz artist Jamie Hewlett for its newest issue, exploring the creative process behind their upcoming album Humanz among other topics. Mentioned a bit haphazardly in the interview is that the Demon Dayz Festival will not only be coming to Margate, but also to American shores to the great city of Chicago. The article doesn’t reveal the date of the Chicago edition of the festival, but its unofficial announcement suggests it will be officially announced sooner rather than later. The Margate edition’s lineup hasn’t been announced, but we can assume a host of Gorillaz collaborators will play both editions of the festivals. Check out a screenshot of the QMagazine interview revealing a Chicago edition of the Dream Dayz Festival below, courtesy of KanyeToThe user THEEF: The musician passed away on March 18, aged 90 Fans in St. Louis, Missouri have paid tribute to the late Chuck Berry ahead of a private memorial service. A four-hour public viewing took place at The Pageant club in the musician’s hometown today (April 9), with fans queuing up before dawn to pay their respects. Berry lay in an open casket with his cherry red Gibson ES-335 electric guitar bolted to the inside of its lid, Billboard reports. A musician outside the venue reportedly played songs famously performed by the icon, including ‘Johnny B. Goode’, ‘Sweet Little Sixteen’ and ‘Roll Over Beethoven’. Flower arrangements were displayed in the room, including one in the shape of a guitar sent by The Rolling Stones. A private memorial service and celebration was scheduled to take place after the public viewing concluded, with only Berry’s friends and family permitted entry.
Police were called to Berry’s Missouri home on March 18 when he was found to be unresponsive. He was confirmed to have passed away that afternoon. Berry was considered a pioneer of the rock and roll genre. His first single, ‘Maybellene’ was one of the first songs to be classified as a rock and roll hit. Berry won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 1984 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 1986. By Rhian Daly Our rating: 4 Stars out of 5 ByLeonie Cooper
Drew Love and Dante Jones have reinvigorated sex-pop by adding a little grungeIn the woozy wake of Drake, The Weeknd, Bryson Tiller and Post Malone’s über-laid-back R&B, you’d have thought there was simply no more room for navel-gazing, sex-fixated dudes with bachelor pads full of Sade records, lava lamps and above-average-priced vodka. And yet here come the rather impressive THEY., oozing sauciness as well as some of the most deeply atmospheric tunes this side of The Weeknd’s 2015 smasher ‘Beauty Behind The Madness’. By slightly twisting the sex-pop formula with the addition of gritty guitars, Los Angeles-based vocalist Drew Love and producer Dante Jones manage to reinvigorate the smooth sound of the millennial bunk-up with grit and edge borrowed from the class of 1993. They might have first come to attention thanks to a collaboration with Skrillex and by making beats for Will.i.am, but Jones has made much of Kurt Cobain being his favourite songwriter. While ‘Nü Religion: HYENA’ isn’t quite a sizzurp-drenched ‘Nevermind’, there’s some serious strumming on the vibey ‘What You Want’ that gives it a rawness Drizzy would give away his copy of Skepta’s ‘Konnichiwa’ for. And while Drake seems to spend most of his time moping about his love life, THEY. are comfortable taking on the bigger issues. The powerful ‘Say When’ directly tackles police brutality and Black Lives Matter over grungy guitars and ghostly beats (“Now shoot down my brothers / And let them fall /And then we some thugs if we get involved”). Strangely, though, the album’s highlight is ‘Dante’s Creek’, which sees the theme tune of 1990s teen cry-fest drama Dawson’s Creek reimagined as a slinky soundtrack to seduction. THEY. aren’t afraid of being heard. From the rattling bass on ‘Back It Up’ to the incessant foghorn sample on the dubby ‘U-RITE’, these are sounds made for playing loud, something Cobain would no doubt approve of. When ‘Motley Crew’ explodes into life the beats course through your entire body. THEY. are here not just for your ears, but your entire being. Let them have it. Though Pablo Escobar has been dead for over two decades now, his influence and shadow still hangs over his home nation Columbia. From the reintroduction to the millennial generation in Netflix’s to Narcos, through to Kanye West’s ambiguously titled album ‘Life Of Pablo’, and more recently when Wiz Khalifa inadvertently enraged ardent followers by smoking weed by his grave.
In Lao Ra’s new song ‘Bala’, he’s there too. The Colombian pop provocateur has revealed that her new track, the MIA-esque fusion of dancehall and electro-pop is about the infamous drug kingpin. “Bala is about Pablo Escobar and the memories I have from the 90’s in Colombia – the news on the telly and my parents’ conversations from when I was very little. The referee, the TV presenter, the prison that he built, the wild animals that lived in his finca.” Lao says. “‘Bala’ means ‘bullet’; so does ‘plomo’, and those were his most famous words: ‘plata o plomo’ – ‘money or a bullet’.” It’s another booming effort from Lao, with scattered, bassy beats and powerful distorted vocals culminating in a surprisingly joyous carnival atmosphere. One that somehow finds joy out of the darkness. |
