Holy crap, what a disaster. The Fyre Festival, a new, upscale music festival set on a private island in the Exumas, has turned out to be a horrible scam. Announced a few months ago with a campaign sponsored by Instagram models and organized by Ja Rule and Billy McFarland, the festival promised attendees a luxurious experiences with ticket prices ranging from $1,500 to a whopping £250,000 that came with allegedly full-scale villas and catering. The experienced sounded like a beachy Burning Man on paper, but the actual festival has gone up in metaphorical and nearly literal flames before it’s even officially begun. The chaos began on Thursday as attendees attempted to travel to the festival. The private island quickly reached capacity, with thousands of attendees stuck on cancelled flights with refunded tickets. To make matters worse, the state of the festival on the island turned out to be chaotic: attendees being locked in the local airport for hours, learning that their luxury cabanas were disaster relief tents, finding out many tents had not been assembled yet, having their luggage dropped in a shipping container for storage and more. Blink-182 cancelled their headlining performance, and this morning the Fyre Festival’s official Twitter announced the festival would be postponed as they make efforts to get everyone home safely. The full debacle has been well documented on Twitter (where it became a trending hashtag), the Fyre Festival subreddit, Instagram (ironically) and other social media platforms. It appears the experience may be getting a bit exaggerated by /r/TheDonald users aiming to sir the fire, but overall the festival has gone down as a complete disaster before it even officially began. Even the TomorrowWorld proceedings didn’t turn out this horribly. It’s still before noon on the west coast, so I’m not about that turn up just yet. Instead, I like to listen to some smoother, more chill melodies in the mornings to get my engine going and this remix of “Lies” by 32stitches is hitting the spot nicely.
Blending the indie-styled vocals with an anthemic and slightly understated melodic drop, utilizing elements of trap and future bass is the true key to this song’s wonderment. Due to the length of the bridges, unfortunately, the song seems rather short – however, what it lacks in duration it makes up for in quality. Check out the 32stitches remix of “Lies” by Tom & Hills below.
Zedd made waves with his newest song featuring Alessia Cara, entitled “Stay.” With a newer, slightly pop sound and some sweeping synths, not to mention Alessia’s beautiful voice, “Stay” was an instant hit. This week, “Stay” continues to climb the charts as it officially enters the top 10 on the US Top 40 at radio, landing at #9. The single also moved up three spots to #14 on the Billboard Hot 100. Digitally, the song has garnered over 280 million streams including over 157 million on Spotify where the single is #4 on Spotify’s Today’s Top Hits and #10 on the Global Top 200 chart.
Today, the music video for “Stay” is released, directed by Tim Mattia (Troye Sivan, Halsey, The 1975), and features Zedd and Alessia in a tangled web of happenstance and coincidental timing. At its core, it’s a love story; the way it’s filmed, however, it acts as an allegory to how timing can be so, so important in life and love. Kendrick Lamar is expected to bring in big numbers with the release of his fourth studio album, DAMN. According to Billboard, the project is projected to push 475,000 equivalent album units as it tops the Billboard 200 chart. These numbers would be the second-highest selling week for an album so far this year, coming second only to Drake’s More Life debut, which pushed just over 500,000 in its first week. Drizzy spent three weeks at the top position before being dethroned by the Chainsmokers this week.
This will be Kung Fu Kenny’s third #1 album. His previous crowns come from last year’s untitled, unmastered and the Grammy-winning To Pimp a Butterfly. His major label debut, 2012’s good kid m.A.A.d. city, peaked at #2. DAMN. also produced Kendrick’s highest-charting Hot 100 song to date with “HUMBLE.” reaching the #2 position upon its debut. This was the highest entry for a rap song since Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie” hit the second slot back in 2007. by Victoria Hernandez |
